LIVERPOOL
LIL’S
A Restaurant to Hang Your
Military Reunion Hat On
In San Francisco’s Presidio, there is a charming and quaint English pub just
outside of the Gate to the Presidio in the Marina Section of San Francisco
called Liverpool Lil’s. For those of you who are unfamiliar
with the Presidio, let me add a little background. It is a transformed
military base where former military officer homes remain and are leased or
sold to private parties. It is actually a small city where one could survive
inside the park in very nice fashion. Their Recreation Centers are often used
for military reunions.
Liverpool Lil’s is perfect for small groups to gather for
breakfast, lunch or dinner in the official dining room in the back of the pub
for a pre- or post reunion event. The current owner, Gil Hodges, is the
grandson and namesake of the famous Dodger baseball player. Gil is personable,
likeable and so willing to make your dining experience a memorable one, that
you will often see him chatting with his customers and eager to entertain you
with some of Lil’s memorable past.
An array of delicious menu items can be enjoyed in this formal dining room
that is adorned with white table linens such as their “Tournedos Raphael,”
broiled beef filets garnished with grilled mushroom caps and béarnaise sauce
or taste their juicy yummy hamburgers. The signature stained glass windows
remain a bit of a mystery. All Hodges knows is that a gentleman named Smoothie
(he’s unsure of the spelling) created the stained-glass window at
Lil’s and the Brazenhead (both owned by Ralph
Maher). Smoothie was a server, bartender, host, artist and a great help to
Maher for many years.
For a more casual encounter, enjoy the cozy pub-like cocktail lounge. From
here, you can enjoy the displays of sports memorabilia that showcase the many
athletes who frequent Lil’s.
Some background on the place. “Who is Lil?” When original owner, Ralph Maher,
first opened his restaurant, he had a friend who lived in Liverpool, England,
whom he would visit several times a year. Then came Lil, a lovely young lady
he met during one of his many trans-Atlantic voyages. Ralph wanted nothing
more than to take Lil to San Francisco, and Lil wanted nothing more than for
Ralph to pack his bags and settle down in Liverpool. A standoff ensued. Then
Ralph, hoping to entice Lil to come and live in San Francisco, named his bar
after her. Unfortunately, their love did not stand the test of geography, and
neither of them ever made the move.
With this history, memorabilia filling every space, and the excellent food,
you can’t go wrong reserving a room for your next reunion event.
